NEW GLARUS - A tough loss one day and a late start the next usually doesn't bode well for most teams. The Glarner Knights may be an exception. New Glarus poured in 54 points in the second half on its way to an 81-52 win over Marshall Friday.

"In the third quarter, we got out running and got some touches in the paint and the guys got hot from the outside," New Glarus head coach Tony Sysko said. "When it's going good, everyone wants to be apart of it. I'm proud of the effort tonight."

After tipping-off 35 minutes behind schedule, the Knights, who fell to Wisconsin Heights Thursday, found themselves in a quick hole in the opening minutes to Marshall, 7-1. Tyler Kreklow drove the lane for a hoop to spark New Glarus, which then rattled off an 11-0 run. By the time the opening quarter came to an end, the Knights led 18-11.

"I thought we had a good first quarter," Sysko said. "Second quarter they made a nice run and we got away from the things we like to do. We didn't pass well and we didn't look to the post like we wanted to."

Marshall (2-14, 1-6 Capitol South) picked up its game in the second half, working the game back to a 24-24 tie with under 2 minutes to play. Three late free throws put the Knights (10-7, 3-5) on top at halftime, 27-24.

"We struggled in the first half, but we came out as a team in the second half and we all found each other," senior Cameron Jeglum said.

Just 10 seconds into the third quarter, Ryan Bright took a pass inside from Kreklow to open the lead. Moments later, Jeglum came out of his shoes, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers to give New Glarus a 10-point advantage at 35-35.

"It's good to see Cam get hot tonight. He had a great game," Sysko said. "When a guy gets hot like that and knocks one down, and we preach this in practice, we tell them to find him on the next possession and see if he gets hot. Guys started looking for Cam and he was knocking 'em down."

Jeglum has struggled with his shot all year, which has led Bright (24 points) to pick up much of the needed points every game.

"Teams have been starting to take attention away from me since Ryan has been really hot. But I made one (3-pointer) and they all started dropping. It feels really good," said Jeglum, who scored 14 of his 24 points in the third. "There have been a lot of games where I hit the first 3 and then they stop falling, but tonight the second one fell."

Jeglum, New Glarus' resident playmaker, was bound to break loose.

"It's fun to see Cammy come out and hit four 3s like that," Bright said. "We have a really good team. It's in us. We just have to keep believing in ourselves and come out and have fun like we did."

The Knights pounded the ball inside throughout the third, hit plenty of shots from distance and forced the Cardinals into numerous turnovers and fouls. By the end of the frame, New Glarus held a 53-38 advantage.

"That second half was about as much fun as we've had all year - smiling, communicating, having fun. It was awesome. We really needed that after last night," Bright said.

A 28-14 fourth quarter sealed the win for the Knights.

"It was a good all around effort by our boys tonight," Sysko said. "It was nice to get all of our guys in there on parent's night."

New Glarus travels to Waterloo (8-9, 3-4) Feb. 18.
