EVANSVILLE - Injuries hampered the Monroe High School boys soccer team in an 8-1 nonconference loss to Evansville on Thursday.
Monroe (2-3-2) got a goal from junior Nick Schumacher at 17 minutes, 9 seconds to tie the game at 1. The Cheesemakers were locked in a tie game for the first 40 minutes of the first half. That is when the injuries hit. Monroe sophomore Alex Barradas injured his hamstring and junior Victor Vasquez re-injured a sprained ankle and both were forced out of the game. The Blue Devils went on to score seven unanswered goals, including two goals in the final five minutes of the first half, to take a 3-1 lead. Evansville's Teyton Townsend and Tristan Stencel each scored two goals.
"When we are healthy we can play with these really good teams," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "We don't have the depth to deal with injuries. That (two goals the Blue Devils scored before half) took the air out of us."
Sugar River 3, Cambridge-Deerfield 0
CAMBRIDGE - Senior Brock Kelly scored two goals to lead the Raiders to a shutout against Cambridge-Deerfield in their Capitol Conference opener.
Kelly scored the first goal in the 5th minute. Sugar River junior Justin Knoebl scored a goal in the 35th minute to extend the Raiders' lead to 2-0.
Kelly tacked on his second goal on an assist from Jacob Krantz with about three minutes to go in the game.
Sugar River improves to 2-1-1 overall.
"We had a lot of quality opportunities tonight," Sugar River coach Kyle Webber said. "It was a very tough physical game. Cambridge-Deerfield did well with their pressure. It was a good first conference win."
