CLINTON - The Monroe boys track team's 3,200-meter relay team looked to be in postseason form, winning a WIAA Division 2 Clinton regional title Monday night.
The Cheesemakers' distance team of seniors Kyle Klein, Matthew Priebe and juniors Cullen Sampson and Brett DeNure won the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:23.04, beating out second place Sugar River.
"It feels great," Klein said. "The big goal is just to make it to state."
DeNure saw another advantage to winning the regional in the 3,200 relay.
"We need to get into the fast heat so we have a legitimate chance to make it to state," DeNure said. "Our goal today was to put up a good time."
Priebe helped give the Cheesemakers a cushion.
"In the second lap, I just put a surge on and he fell back," Priebe said.
Sampson said the key was getting out hard and keeping the lead.
Brodhead-Juda outdistanced Big Foot, 128-105 for the regional title. The Cheesemakers finished third with 94 points and qualified six individuals to go along with three relays for the Boscobel sectional on Thursday.
"We definitely didn't go there and shock the world," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "We set up the meet to get as many people through with minimal effort. In this meet a fourth place is as good as first and a fifth place is as good as last.
"We could have put a lineup in each event and went after a team title, but that would have tired people out."
The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Caleb Ahrens, Tad Christen, Sampson and DeNure won a regional championship with a time of 3:33.2. DeNure also won the 800 (2:00.74).
Sampson qualified for the sectional with a second-place finish in the 400 (:54.52). Christen also qualified for the sectional with a fourth place finish in the triple jump (38-feet, 11 1/2 inches). Lucas Lue threw a personal best 140 feet, 3 inches in the discus to take fourth and qualify for the sectional.
The Cheesemakers had two runners qualify for the sectional in the 1,600 with Jon Swartz, third (4:49.86) and Joe Pecora (4:50.66) fourth.
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Jordan Steiner, Christen, Mason Goff and Zach Rast took third (:46.38).
Sugar River dominated the 3,200, placing three in the top four including Josh Cate in second (10:06.31), Adam Watkins in third (10:10.67) and Travis Beutler in fourth (10:11.22).
Brodhead-Juda's Caleb Frost swept regional titles in the 110 (:15.89) and 300 (:40.56) hurdles respectively.
"After winning conference, I thought I could do it," Frost said. "My goal was to just basically to advance. It's been a fun year and I want to keep going."
