MONONA - Monroe High School girls tennis coach Brad Saugstad had to shuffle his lineup due to some players battling illness, and Monona Grove swept the Cheesemakers 7-0 in a dual match on Tuesday.

Monona Grove junior Amanda Newsman defeated Monroe freshman Grace Tostrud 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Monona Grove freshman Hailey Munz beat Monroe junior Maggie Setterstrom 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Monona Grove senior Emma Vicen defeated Monroe junior Ashley Placek 6-3, 6-2. Placek usually plays No. 1 doubles.

"We had to shuffle the lineup tonight because of illness so we had some girls playing in different positions," Saugstad said in an email. "Although the score doesn't say it, I could see more and more of what we have been working on in practice being applied in the match."

The Silver Eagles' Payton Lee, a freshman playing No. 4 singles, beat Monroe freshman Jensen Christensen 6-1, 6-1.

The Silver Eagles swept all the doubles matches. Monona Grove seniors Kelice Lee and McKenna Doherty defeated Monroe junior Parris Bunker and sophomore Sam Huizenga 6-2, 6-3. Bunker and Huizenga moved up to No. 1 doubles after playing most of the season at No. 2 doubles.

"They played a really good match," Saugstad said of Bunker and Huizenga. "They were moving well and putting balls away. They played with a lot of energy."

At No. 2 doubles, Monona Grove junior Sara Paulson and freshman Jewell Lindwall beat Monroe junior Kiara Miller and senior Liz Skatrud 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Monona Grove sophomores Peyton Blang and Kailey DeVault defeated Monroe junior Skye Allen and sophomore Lizzy Neuenschwander 6-3, 6-0. Allen moved from her usual No. 4 singles spot to play No. 3 doubles, and Neuenschwander was bumped up from junior varsity.

"They have never played together but hit a lot of good shots and worked well together," Saugstad said. "Just like No. 1 doubles, the score doesn't reflect how happy I was with their play."

Monona Grove's junior varsity team beat Monroe 11-8.
