Hot-shooting MG rolls past Monroe

MONONA - The Monona Grove girls basketball team hit six 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 48-25 victory against Monroe on Thursday night.

The Silver Eagles outscored the Cheesemakers 10-2 in the first quarter and led 23-9 at halftime. Monroe was held without a basket in the first quarter, the Cheesemakers' points coming on free throws by sophomore Taylor Barrett.

The Silver Eagles scored 18 of their 23 first half points on 3-pointers.

"They came out and shot it pretty well," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "They played solid defense and made it tough on us."

Barrett scored 12 points to lead the Cheesemakers (5-14, 3-7 Badger South), who made 9 of 17 free throws.

Darlington 67, Riverdale 31

DARLINGTON - Junior guard Cassidy Chambers erupted for 29 points to power the Redbirds.

Darlington (11-8, 7-4 SWAL) opened a 15-4 first-quarter lead and led 30-14 at halftime. Chambers scored all of her points in the first three quarters. Darlington senior Amy Jorgenson added 18 points.

"We definitely wanted to step up our game on defense," Darlington coach Mike Chambers said.

"We wanted to play a whole game on defense. We did a lot of rotating. Every girl played every quarter. To be able to still do what we were able to do was kind of nice."
