MONONA - Sophomore Hailey Betthauser went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to power the Monroe High School softball team to a 7-2 win over Monona Grove on Tuesday.

Monroe (7-2, 4-1 Badger South), ranked ninth in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Division 2 state poll, scored two runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Betthauser hit a two-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth to give the Cheesemakers a 5-0 lead.

The Silver Eagles battled back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Monona Grove had its lead-off hitter up and the bases loaded with one out, but the Cheesemakers caught a break when freshman first baseman Grace Tostrud caught a line drive and stepped on first to end the inning.

"That really was a key play," Monroe coach Joe O'Leksy said. "It could have been bad if she (Tostrud) doesn't make a great play and double the girl off first base."

Monroe junior Alysha Witt went 3-for-4 with a double, and senior Lexi Hilliard was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Senior Carly Upmann also went 2-for-4 with a double. The other extra-base hit for the Cheesemakers was junior Meredith Hose's RBI double.

Sophomore Olivia Bobak pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up two runs on four hits. Bobak struck out 10 and walked four.

"She didn't have her best stuff, but she battled through it," O'Leksy said. "It was good to see her have some adversity and get through it very well."
