MONROE - Right midfielder Emily Frankowski didn't have any doubt that the Cheesemakers girls soccer team could win the Monroe Quad tournament Saturday.
Frankowski scored two goals in two games to help Monroe knock off Reedsburg 4-2 to win the championship at Honey Creek Park.
"We won it in past years," Frankowski said. "We thought we would have a good chance of winning it again. We used team work a lot and that is what wins games. It felt great. We used our aggressiveness to get us going."
Frankowski scored a game-tying goal on an assist from junior Kelley Baumann at 2 minutes, 27 seconds to tie the game at 1. Monroe sophomore Maddie Kallgren, who has scored nine goals this year, scored two goals against Reedsburg to propel the Cheesemakers. Kallgren scored her first goal on a pass from Madeline Knutson at 16:55 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-1 lead.
Monroe senior Gabby Ludwig tacked on a goal on an assist from Frankowski at 29:07 to give the Cheesemakers a 3-1 lead at the half.
"It's a real boost of confidence," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said as the Cheesemakers improve to 4-2 after winning just one game in an injury-ravaged season last year. "It's another win. It's nice to win the championship on our home turf. I think they are showing they can be competitive with any team."
Kallgren scored her second goal on a direct free kick against the Beavers to give the Cheesemakers an extra insurance goal at 41:58.
"It was just magnificent," O'Neill said. "It's always nice to immediately answer back. Sometimes in past years we haven't been able to. This year we have been able to come back after being down one or two goals."
The Cheesemakers are averaging three goals per game this season after averaging just 0.93 goals per game last year when they were shut out six times.
"One of our goals was to score more goals this year and that has already happened," O'Neill said.
Monroe senior goalkeeper Shyanna Kelley had eight saves.
In the shutout against Jefferson, Kelley had seven saves. Frankowski scored the first goal against Jefferson at 23:08 to put the Cheesemakers on the board.
Ludwig set up the second goal with a cross to Kallgren who scored a goal at 32:58 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. Monroe's Hannah Calaway added a goal at 46:14 to ice the game for the Cheesemakers.
Calaway played as a defender with Kelley in goal. Monroe junior Jenna Crook missed the two games with an ankle injury and junior goalkeeper Gwendolyn Ambrose missed both games due participating in the state bowling tournament.
"She (Calaway) played two great games for us in a position (defender) she isn't used to," O'Neill said. "Everyone was very determined to give it everything they had."
Monroe will host Badger South Conference rival Oregon at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Honey Creek Park. O'Neill is looking forward to the first conference game.
"We are in a tough conference and Oregon is always a competitive and skilled team," she said. "I think they will be one of the top teams in the conference. We have had some good games to get us ready. I think we are ready for the tough conference games."
