MADISON - Albeit narrowly, Alex Holmes answered the bell Tuesday at The Oaks during a Badger Conference dual meet with Monona Grove.
With his four teammates already off the picturesque course, Monroe's No. 5 ball-striker needed a 46 or better to pull out a team victory. Despite double-bogeying the last two holes to make things very interesting, Holmes carded a 9-over 45 to pull out the victory, 159-160.
"We need these kinds of things to happen so that every member of the team understands that every shot could potentially be the one that wins it for us," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "It is not acceptable to lose your composure if we want to win these close matches and these guys were able to do that."
Monroe senior Gary Petit shot a 1-under 35 and was matched by the Silver Eagles' Nick Douglas for medalist honors.
Much like in Monday's Madison Edgewood Invitational, Monroe was victimized by big numbers and Petit was not without guilt as he bogeyed two of his last three holes.
"That's a great round though," Jackson beamed.
Mitch McArdle overcame three 3-putts to card a 3-over 39 while Brandon Wilson posted a 40 despite two big numbers of his own.
"Brandon is playing very steadily but still waiting for that great round and it is very close," Jackson said. "He seems to have one or two bigger numbers thrown in a round that spoils that low score that he would like."
Monroe's junior varsity squad dropped a 182-203 decision.
Monroe returns to The Oaks Thursday for a tournament starting at 8 a.m. before hosting Verona Friday at the Monroe Country Club.
