DUBUQUE - Monroe freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner opened up the track season Friday with a bang, winning the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 3 inches at the UD girls Indoor Classic at the University of Dubuque.
Hirsbrunner also finished second in the 400-meter dash at the 16-team season-opening meet.
"It's a great way to start," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said. "She performed big when she needed to."
Hirsbrunner ran the 400 in 1 minute, 3.72 seconds.
"That 400 is a good time for this time of the year," Miller said.
Davenport Assumption outdistanced Wahlert to win the team title 119-98. Monroe finished 12th as a team (34).
Monroe senior Tre Voegeli won the pole vault 9-0 and freshman Josie Eberle took third (7-9).
"It's not as high as she wanted to go, but she was experimenting with a different pole," Miller said. "It's sort of anticlimactic when there is no one at your level to compete against."
Monroe sophomore Abby Oudinot took fourth in the long jump (15-5) and freshman Alicia Kuester took seventh in the long jump (14-10).
"We had some freshmen really step up and give us some points," he said.
Miller said both the 800 and 1,600 relays also ran strong races.
"They didn't place," Miller said. "Everyone who ran did a nice job. It was a great meet for us."
