MCFARLAND - The Monroe High School girls track and field team will send four individuals and three relays - two of them record breakers - to the state track meet after their performances at the WIAA Division 2 McFarland sectional on Thursday.
The Cheesemakers' 800-meter relay team of senior Isabel Bazley, senior Abby Oudinot, freshman Cammi Ganshert and junior Jordan Hirsbrunner won a sectional title in a school-record time of 1 minute, 44.99 seconds. The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Bazley, sophomore Mya Waterman, Ganshert and Hirsbrunner won a sectional championship in a school-record time of 4:00.99.
Jefferson outdueled Monroe for the sectional team championship 81-64.
"It was an unbelievable night," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "We are on fire right now. Jefferson has a lot of firepower. We have a lot of big guns, too. I think we are the team to beat (at state)."
The top four competitors in each event advance to the WIAA state championship June 3-4 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Hirsbrunner had a hand in winning four sectional championships. In addition to the two relays, Hirsbrunner was a sectional champion in the 300 hurdles (45.23) and in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches). It marks the third time this season she has defeated defending Division 2 state champion Mikaela Grant of Jefferson in the 300 hurdles. Grant placed second Thursday in 45.96.
"She (Hirsbrunner) just blew them out of the water at the end," Davis said.
Monroe senior Abby Oudinot took second in the triple jump (34-11). Junior Josie Eberle finished second in the pole vault (9-3).
Eberle teamed with Bazley, Oudinot and Ganshert to take second in the 400 relay (50.09).
Brodhead-Juda's 3,200 relay team of senior Amber Pickel, senior Taylor Bluemel, senior Cameron Novy and sophomore Cora Purdue won a sectional title (9:40.61).
Brodhead-Juda sophomore Madee Harding won a sectional championship in the 200 (26.06) and took second in the 400 (59.04).
Purdue added a third-place finish in the 800 (2:18.10).
Sugar River junior Noelle Marie finished second in the 3,200 (11:21.29) and junior teammate Krista Diaz took second in the 100 hurdles (15.27).
In the boys sectional, Monroe's 3,200 relay team of sophomores Dylan Scace, Drake Ingold and Jonah Tostrud and senior Thang Lu won a sectional title in 8:04.20. The Cheesemakers will have the fastest time in the relay at the state meet.
"They're excited about that," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "We were hoping they would win the race and get in the fast heat. You can't ask for anything more than that."
The Monroe boys will send two individuals and two relay teams to state. In addition to the 3,200 relay team, Monroe senior Mitch Keith took second in the pole vault (13-0), and Lu was second in the 800 (1:57.94).
Mosher likes the way Keith has made a surge in the pole vault late in the season.
"He's in a position to contend for a medal at state," Mosher said. "He has one of the top four jumps. If he continues to do what he has been doing and improves he can be on the podium."
Mosher said the surprise state qualifier was the 1,600 relay team of Jason Koller, Cam Shaw, Alex Koller and Lu. The Cheesemakers' relay team took fourth with a time of 3:29.34.
"We really didn't run a fast 4-by-400 relay until the regional," Mosher said. "We didn't know what we could do. Three of those guys are seniors and wanted one more race."
Sugar River senior Landon Zimmerman finished second in the shot put (52-111â"2) and in the discus (161-9).
