BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica boys basketball coach Kevin Parman didn't need to be convinced Platteville was a dangerous team.
Platteville proved to be too much of a challenge after the Vikings dug a 16-point deficit and the Hillmen held off a second-half rally and cruised to a 55-36 win Saturday.
Platteville's Eli Bilderback scored the first eight points for his team as the Hillmen raced out to an 18-2 lead. Bilderback, who scored a game-high 14 points, drilled a 3-pointer at 5 minutes, 10 seconds to go in the first quarter to give the Hillmen an 8-2. The spurt was highlighted by 3-pointers from Adam Lange and Jordan Wagner.
"They have the bigs," Parman said. "If they are shooting like that, they are a match-up problem for a lot of teams. We got down, but we battled back. You just hope they would cool down."
Pecatonica (6-6, 3-2 Six Rivers East) got off to a cold shooting start going 1-for-7 in the first quarter. The Vikings committed six of their 16 turnovers in the first quarter.
Pecatonica stormed back from an 18-2 deficit in the second quarter. Pecatonica senior Jason Meudt scored a layup on the break to slice the Hillmen's lead to 18-8. Fellow senior Jeremy Meudt, who scored a team-high 10 points, helped the Vikings close the second quarter with a bang when he drained a halfcourt 3-pointer right before the buzzer to cut the halftime deficit to 29-18.
Jason Meudt scored seven points and had six rebounds for the Vikings. Pecatonica senior Devin Jeglum scored seven points and sophomore Wyatt Massey and junior Tannar Johnson added six each.
"The back-to-back games came back and hurt us," Parman said after the Vikings beat Argyle 40-33 Friday night. "They played Friday night too. I'm not making excuses. We had a little bit of a letdown. We can just learn from it and achieve our goals in conference."
Pecatonica chipped away at the lead in the third quarter. A free throw by Jeremy Meudt cut the Hillmen's lead to 31-23 with 6:01 left in the period. Johnson scored down low and Massey hit a jumper in the lane late in the third quarter that trimmed the Hillmen's lead to 33-29.
That's as close as the Vikings would get. Platteville's Tyler Ware nailed a back-breaking 3-pointer to give the Hillmen a 36-29 lead entering the fourth quarter. Platteville went on a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter to put the game away. Lange drilled a baseline jumper and Robert Steinhoff scored down low to give the Hillmen a 45-31 lead with 5:20 to go. The Hillmen outscored the Vikings 19-7 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
"That was kind of the dagger," Parman said. "We have to make a choice to get better. We are halfway through the season. We have to be able to correct some of the mistakes we have been making. It's all about the fundamentals. If we want to get better, we have to get better at the fundamentals."
