Hilliard named WBCA Div. 2 all-state

Sydney Hilliard was named The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association named The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association named Sydney Hilliard first-team Division 2 all-state on Monday. Hilliard averaged 19 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.2 steals per game.
MONROE - The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association named Monroe High School sophomore point guard Sydney Hilliard first-team Division 2 all-state on Monday.

Hilliard was one of five players to receive unanimous selection to the 10-player all-state team that also included Beaver Dam's Cassidy Trotter, Monona Grove's McKenna Warnock, Pewaukee's MacKenzie Schill and Tayla Stuttley of Onalaska.

Hilliard averaged 19 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.2 steals per game in helping lead Monroe to its first WIAA state tournament appearance since 2010.

The other all-state selections were Stoughton senior Marissa Robson, Elizabeth Edinger of West De Pere, Shay Frederick of Hortonville, Leah Porath of New London and Janelle Shiffler of Union Grove.

Madison Edgewood senior Estella Moshkau, a Stanford recruit who was named co-Miss Basketball Saturday, was named all-state in Division 3.

Three Monroe players were named first-team Badger South All-Conference recently - Hilliard, sophomore Emily Benzschawel and junior Sydney Mathiason.

Hilliard, Moshkau and Warnock each were named unanimous first-team all-conference.

Benzschawel (12.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Mathiason (11.6 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.8 blocked shots per game) along with Hilliard were vital cogs for the Cheesemakers. Hilliard, who has scholarship offers from the University of Wisconsin, Marquette, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, South Dakota State and Northern Colorado, helped the Cheesemakers win a Badger South tri-championship with Madison Edgewood and Stoughton.

Both Monroe seniors Jordan Hirsbrunner and Lexi Hilliard earned honorable mention all-conference.

The Cheesemakers finished the season 21-4 and lost to Beaver Dam in a Division 2 state semifinal game 62-47 on Friday.
