FORT ATKINSON - Monroe sophomore Jeff Hill had his sights set on breaking the Monroe High School pole vault record.
To get there, Hill cleared 13-feet, 10 inches to win the pole vault in a dual meet with Fort Atkinson to break the sophomore pole vault record of Mark Glendenning (13-9) which he set in 1977.
Mark Glendenning is the son of pole vault coach Dick Glendenning.
"This was special for Jeff and coach Glendenning," Monroe boys track coach Dave Hirsbrunner said.
"Coach Glendenning puts in endless hours with the vaulters. He and Jeff have developed quite a bond. This vault also puts Jeff in the No. 4 spot of all time vaults."
The Cheesemakers won 14 of the 18 events to roll to a 108-38 win over the Blackhawks on Tuesday. The Cheesemakers racked up over 100 points for the fourth straight meet.
Monroe senior Brett DeNure won the 800-meter run (1 minute, 59.50 seconds) and helped lead the winning 3,200 relay.
DeNure teamed with Cody Plenge, Dylan Starck and Cullen Sampson to win the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:52. Sampson finished first in the high jump (5-8).
The Cheesemakers swept four events including the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, shot put and discus. Monroe sophomore Caleb Ahrens won the 110 hurdles (:16.30) and Cameron Wahl won the 300 hurdles (:45.10).
Luke Voegeli won the shot put (48-5 1/2) and Lucas Leu took the top spot in the discus (136-4). Monroe senior Joe Pecora won the 1,600 with a time of 4:45.30.
Monroe senior Tad Christen won the long jump (19-2 1/4) and Mack Brunker took first in the triple jump (38-2).
Monroe won all four relays. The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Garrett Wyss, Mason Goff, Alex Bartlett and Brunker took first with a time of (:46.60).
In the 800 relay, Goff, Bryan Tordoff, Dan Vale and Christen won with a time of 1:36.80. Tordoff teamed up with Pecora, Aaron Peterson and Skyler Stingley to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:41.40.
"Our main goal tonight was to get out of Fort with a win," Hirsbrunner said. "We didn't care by how much, we just wanted to notch the victory. Our guys seem to thrive on competition.
"We pulled some of our guys out of events as the meet went on to try and give them a rest. As a team, we were a little sluggish from the prom weekend. I think some of the guys were going on limited sleep."
