LAKE GENEVA - The Monroe girls tennis team's season is all but over. The Cheesemakers No. 1 doubles team of Melissa Hill and Pam Lehman qualified for state with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Fort Atkinson's Brianne Brandenberg and Alli Deichle at the Janesville sectional on Wednesday.
The pair finished fourth in the sectional, though, after losses to Lizzie Malzfeldt and Katelyn Ludeking of Milton (6-2, 6-2) and Hilary Schroeder and Anna Spiekerman of Madison East (7-6 [6], 6-3).
"Pam and Melissa played very well against some hard-hitting teams," Monroe head coach Stephanie Miller said.
The rest of the team had a marvelous showing at sectionals, but unfortunately, only the No. 1 duo will represent Monroe in Madison next week.
Kristin McArdle was bumped from competition in the No. 1 singles bracket after a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Madison East's Mara Weiner.
"Kristin lost a match to a tough Madison East player, but played much tougher than the score indicated," Miller said. " She executed points well and played very aggressive coming into the net."
Kiera Berger fell to Lexie Weigand of Fort Atkinson 6-2, 6-3 in her first match of the day, but beat Lauren Brooks of Janesville Parker 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 for the third-place title in the No. 3 singles bracket.
Ashley Hermanson and Gwen Sutter fell to Avery Young and Nellie Mitchell of Madison East 6-3, 7-6 (4) in their first match in No. 2 doubles action. The duo also finished third in the sectional with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win over Olivia Ehlers and and Emily Reshower of Janesville Craig.
"Everyone who played today went out and had great matches," Miller said.
