MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. - The Monroe girls basketball team knew it faced a difficult assignment against Davenport Assumption on Saturday.
Iowa's No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A, the state's second-largest division, used a 17-5 run in the second quarter to seize control and roll to a 64-38 win.
The Cheesemakers trailed just 10-7 at the end of the first quarter before Assumption dominated the second quarter in opening a 29-15 halftime lead.
Senior Brooke McBain and sophomore Vanessa Studer each scored 14 points for Monroe (3-9), which went 22 of 31 from the line.
"We knew coming in that they had some good shooters," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "When they were left open they made them."
