MONROE - The Monroe High School boys soccer team received a crushing blow before its season opener Tuesday.

Monroe senior Ryne Miller aggravated a sprained knee injury during warm-ups and didn't play. And then Wisconsin Heights senior Colin Hosking scored two goals to propel the Vanguards to a 3-1 win over Monroe at Honey Creek Park.

"We kind of had a rough start," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "Ryne Miller re-injured his knee in warmups and we had two starters come late. We didn't know if they were going to come. We had to scramble to fill those spots. We had a couple kids from the JV team start and play the first 15 minutes. They played hard, but throwing new guys together with new faces there will be some mistakes."

Miller, the Cheesemakers' leading returning goal soccer, will miss three other games this week and maybe more.

"We want him to rest it for about a week," Vasquez said. "We don't want to put him back out there until he gets the rest he needs."

Monroe freshman Alex Barradas scored a goal at 26 minutes, 5 seconds to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin Heights battled back and tied the game on Hosking's first goal at 41:55. Each one of the Cheesemakers' defenders played the entire 90-minute game. It was tied at 1 at halftime, but the Vanguards broke the match open with two second-half goals.

Monroe senior Jacob Ritschard was called for a push in the back about 14 minutes into the second half, and it gave the Vanguards a golden scoring opportunity.

Wisconsin Heights' Riley Moore scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick to give the Vanguards a 2-1 lead at 59:45.

"It was unfortunate," Vasquez said of the penalty. "It was probably a penalty the refs usually let go. It wasn't deliberate. They were both going for the ball."

Hosking scored his second goal at 64:58.

Monroe sophomore Devan Schulte, who is usually the JV goalkeeper, started in goal and had 15 saves.

"It's a good experience for him," Vasquez said. "He did a really good job."

Monroe senior Atticus Pond, who usually starts at goalkeeper, started in the field.

Monroe will host Watertown at 5 p.m. Thursday at Honey Creek Park. The Cheesemakers will then host a quadrangular tournament Saturday. Monroe will play Richland Center at 10 a.m.

Miller will still be out, and four to five other players are still on vacation.

"This week our depth will be weak," Vasquez said.
