MONROE - Extra work often makes for a better reward.
"The guys have been working a lot in the offseason because they are really excited about this season," Monroe boys soccer coach Tony Stamm said after his team defeated Reedsburg 4-2 in the 2009 season opener. "They want to have a really good year."
Andrew Aurit scored three goals and assisted another to lead the Cheesemakers.
"The guys got me a couple of nice assists that really helped," Aurit said.
Monroe got to work right away, putting plenty of pressure on Reedsburg with a steady mix of breakaways and possession offense.
Seven minutes, eight seconds into the game, Aurit juked out Reedsburg's goalie for the first goal of the season. Nearly nine minutes later, Aurit scored his second goal of the game.
Monroe carried the 2-0 lead into halftime, and added on to the advantage quickly in the second half.
On a breakaway in the 45th minute, Aurit out maneuvered the goalie again and sent an uncontested pass to Lucas Goetz, who sent the ball cleanly into the goal.
Moments later, in the 48th minute, Reedsburg got off the egg.
In the 56th minute, Monroe goalkeeper Jordan Steurer picked up a shot and launched a punt up field. Aurit picked up the pass and sent a shot out from the top of the box, passed the goalie and into the net for the score.
Reedsburg scored one more goal before the game ended, but Stamm was pleased with what he saw from his team.
"Our guys did a great job. Especially on defense - they were great tonight," he said.
Aurit, a senior, was pleased with how well his team started the season, but knows that they still have a lot of work to do.
"We did pretty good tonight, although I know we can do better. We just need to control the ball more," Aurit said.
The junior varsity team won 4-1.
