FREEPORT - Monroe-New Glarus freshman Madelyn Hammer won two individual events in a dual meet at Freeport Saturday.

Hammer won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 9.59 seconds and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.03). Freeport defeated Monroe-New Glarus 103-71, but the Cheesemakers had four first-place finishes.

Monroe junior Abby Oudinot took first place in the 50 freestyle (27.35) and Anna Wolf finished first in the 500 freestyle (5:59.64).

"You look at the score and think we came out on the short end of the stick ... but what it doesn't say is we scored 30 more points against Freeport this year than we did last year," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "That is a major step forward for this small group of swimmers."

In the 200 medley relay, the Cheesemakers took both second and third place. The second-place team of Skylar Lassen, Reagan Andersen, Oudinot and MacKenzie Hesgard finished with a time of 2:11.15. The Cheesemakers' third-place medley relay team included Anna Meritt, Monica Sefcik, Wolf and Grace Moehn with a time of 2:18.25.

"That was a great way to start the meet," Moser said.

Monroe-New Glarus had four second-place finishes. The Cheesemakers will have their home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday when they host Milton at the Green County YMCA.
