Hammer, Lassen star at Elkhorn

ELKHORN - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team had four top-five performances to take seventh out of 12 teams at the Elkhorn Invitational on Saturday.

Monroe-New Glarus junior Maddie Hammer finished second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 21.64 seconds to help the Cheesemakers rack up 152 points as a team.

McFarland, last year's Division 2 state runner-up, won nine of the 11 events to win the championship with 532 points. Monroe-New Glarus scored in nine of the 11 events and finished just behind Fort Atkinson.

"The girls swam with much more confidence today," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "We had 11 PRs."

The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of senior Skylar Lassen, junior Brynn Ritschard, sophomore Nina Schiro and Hammer took second with a personal-record time of 2:01.66.

Lassen took fourth in the 100 freestyle (1:05.25) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:13.76).

Schiro placed seventh in the backstroke (1:14.96). Junior Grace Keith finished eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:17.83).

Monroe junior Ally Einbeck set a personal record time in the 200 individual medley by 10 seconds (3:29.73) and in the 100 freestyle, she set a PR by four seconds (1:26.11).

Monroe will host Milton in a Badger South Conference meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Green County YMCA.
