MADISON - Both Monroe High School senior Traiten Gorr and junior Kyle Walter kept their medal hopes alive at the WIAA Division 2 state wrestling tournament Thursday night at the Kohl Center.
At 220 pounds, Gorr (40-2) edged Lomira junior Allan Klink 3-2 in a preliminary match to reach the quarterfinals.
Gorr came through with an escape early in the third period to tie it at 1. He scored on a takedown with 38 seconds to go to seal the win.
"Traiten had two or three opportunities for a single leg takedown in the first period," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "He really didn't have his best technique. He was really worn out. He expended a lot of energy in that first period. A win is a win. It really doesn't matter how you win. A win advances you."
Gorr, ranked No. 5 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll, will wrestle Amery senior Eli Newton in a quarterfinal match today. If Gorr beats Newton, he would wrestle in the semifinals Friday night. Both Gorr and Walter are assured of at least two more matches at state.
Walter (36-9) pinned Chetek senior Elijah Whitman in 4 minutes, 33 seconds at heavyweight. Walter scored on a takedown early on. After Whitman tied it at 2 on a reversal, Walter came through with an escape to take a 3-2 lead. Walter built a 6-3 lead before using a half-nelson to turn Whitman for the pin.
"You just never know about heavyweights if they will roll on their back," Witt said. "It's a good confidence booster for him."
Walter will wrestle top-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran senior Quinton Reed (48-1) in today's quarterfinals.
At 195, Southern Door junior Tory Jandrin defeated Monroe junior Hayden Arneson 7-3.
"Hayden had a great effort," Witt said. "He outworked him."
Arneson trailed 5-3 late in the match and Jandrin scored on a takedown in the waning moments.
"Hayden was so close to tying it up," Witt said. "He flopped at the end taking a shot, and the kid scored on a takedown."
In Division 3, Cochrane-Fountain City freshman Max Dascher pinned Black Hawk-Darlington freshman Hunter Bredeson in 5:54 in a preliminary match at 113 pounds. At 120, freshman teammate Kolbe Ubersox was pinned by Stratford sophomore A.J. Schoenfuss in 3:44.
The quarterfinals begin at 11:15 a.m. today, and the semifinals are at 7 p.m.
