VERONA - The Monroe wrestling team had two champions at the Verona Duals Saturday, Jan. 11.
Monroe freshman Cole Murray (120 pounds) and Traiten Gorr (182) both went 5-0 Saturday. Gorr finished with three pins and Murray posted two pins.
"It's probably the best matches he has wrestled this year," Monroe coach Tom Witt said of Gorr. "He's a little more aggressive. He is riding them down and not giving up escapes."
Monroe went 1-4 in the dual tournament. The Cheesemakers edged Mequon Homestead 41-40 and lost to East Troy 39-36 in pool matches. The Cheesemakers gave up 24 points in forfeits in the first two matches. Monroe senior Brett Zimmerman at heavyweight recorded a pin in his first match and then won second match 7-0 to East Troy. He is still recovering from a back injury.
"He's still not 100 percent," Witt said. "He (Zimmerman) was hurting in that match."
The Cheesemakers lost a pool match to Slinger 48-25. Portage then beat Monroe 43-25 and Verona knocked off the Cheesemakers 48-21.
"We were giving up 30 points in our final three duals," Witt said. "If you look at the matches we actually wrestled, in each of the four duals we out-wrestled them and would have tied Verona."
Monroe freshman David Andrews (106) and senior Austin Minder (195) each went 4-1. Monroe sophomore McKenzy Foley, who wrestled at 138 and 145 went 3-2.
Andrews and Minder each had two pins. Minder lost a heartbreaker to Portage 6-4 in overtime as he was taken down.
