Last year's No. 1 golfer, Nick Baumann, who was first-team all-Badger South Conference and a state qualifier as a sophomore, didn't go out for golf this spring. The senior opted to play tennis instead.
"We are always hoping to be competitive in our conference," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "One of our goals every year is to make it to sectionals. I think it will be a lot harder without our No. 1 golfer to make it back to sectionals."
The Cheesemakers have three of their top five golfers back, led by senior Devon Boeck and junior Collyn Wilde. Boeck, who had an 84 average last season in 18-hole matches, was the medalist at the Stoughton Invitational last season.
Wilde shot a 79 to take eighth at a WIAA Division 2 sectional last season.
Monroe went 2-4 in Badger South dual matches and finished sixth in the conference last year but made a run to the sectional for the third straight year last spring.
"We are not going to be as strong as I had hoped," Rindy said. "We can rebound. We can still be strong enough to make it to sectionals. That is the goal."
Both Boeck and Wilde have worked on improving their game in the offseason by using TrackMan, a golf radar technology, the two have relied on to track and map club path, face angle, attack angle, ball speed and swings. Both Boeck and Wilde were on Monroe's state champion bowling club.
"They know the routine and what to expect," Rindy said of his two upperclassmen leaders. "I think with Devon being a senior he has that drive to be better. They were both on the state bowling team and sometimes success leads to success. I'm hoping they bring that mentality into golf and want to win every match."
The other experienced golfers returning are senior Kyle Krebs and sophomore Jack Rogerson.
Rindy has noticed some changes with Rogerson to start this season compared to his rookie year.
"He grew, and he's getting stronger," Rindy said. "His club speed has increased by 20 miles per hour. He has a lot more power to get better scores now. If we can combine his new power and consistency, I think he will be a better golfer."
Rindy said the focus the first week of practice was on the short game and chipping.
"It's not all about the long drive," Rindy said. "It's about how you get up and down the green. That is what will make the difference."
Monroe freshman Connor Allen is excepted to step into the fifth spot. While Allen is entering just his first year, Rindy said he's a talented golfer who will contribute right away.
Rindy projects the top team in the conference to be Madison Edgewood again. Edgewood finished last year as the WIAA Division 2 state runner-up for the second straight year. Rindy said the other top two contenders in the conference will be Fort Atkinson and Milton.
"Edgewood is always a tough one to beat," he said. "I feel like most of our conference will be trying to catch them. It will be hard to catch them. It's probably more of a race for second."
