Golden Gators fare well at state

The Green County Golden Gators sent 19 swimmers to state recently. MONROE - The Green County Golden Gators 12-and-under swim team finished 15th out of more than 50 clubs at the state meet last weekend. The team also finished as the top team with under 100 swimmers, with nine competing.

"Out of 28 swims, 21 were top-16 finishes (in scoring), 10 of those were top-eight finishes, and six of those 10 were top-two finishes in the state," coach Emily Paradis said.

Five new team records were set by Mazie Paradis, who placed second overall for girls 10 and under.

Mazie Paradis took first place in the 50-breaststroke and the 100-individual medley. She took second-place honors in the 100-freestyle, 50-freestyle, 100-breaststroke and the 200-IM.

Logan Ringhand grabbed a sixth-place finish in the 100-backstroke and seventh-place in the 500-freestyle and 50-backstroke. Simon Zimmerman took sixth place in the 50-backstroke.

Other team competitors for the 12-and-under squad included Megan Chapman, Parker Ferreri, Harper Paradis, Ryan Roelli, Mason Yaun and Anna Zentner.

In the 13-and-over state meet, the Gators placed 26th out of 55 teams, and fourth in teams with under 100 swimmers.

"Out of 46 swims, 34 scored and placed in the top 20, six of those were top-10 finishes, and two were top-three," coach Paradis said.

Mekenzie Hammer, WIAA Division 2 state champion in the fall for the Cheesemakers in the 100-yard backstroke, finished in second place in the 200-backstroke, third in the 100-backstroke, fifth in the 100-IM and 10th in the 200-IM.

Faith Sill was 10th in the 200-backstroke for the Gators, and the relay team of Hammer, Sill, Megan Klinger and Morgan Erstad took 10th place in the 200-medley relay.

Other participants for the Gators were Madelyn Hammer, Silas Leuthner, Alyssa Roelli, Nathan Sill and Eli Zimmerman.
