MONROE - For his efforts in helping to lead the Monroe High School football team this season, senior linebacker Garrett Gogin was unanimously selected to the Badger South All-Conference first team and was named the conference's top linebacker.

Gogin had 94 tackles, which included 10 tackles for loss. He had three fumble recoveries, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one interception. Gogin was the runner-up for the conference's defensive player of the year and was recently selected to the all-region team.

"It's at the top," Gogin said of where he would rank his conference's best linebacker honor. "I didn't do it alone. That's for sure."

Monroe football coach Curt Miller commended Gogin on his season in Miller's final year as head coach.

"It's pretty special," Miller said of Gogin being named the conference's top linebacker and the runner-up for defensive player of the year. "The neat thing about it is Garrett didn't do it because he was the most talented from the start. He did it because he worked hard and trained. It's good it can go to such a good person who can get those kinds of accolades."

Gogin is the first player for the Cheesemakers to make the all-region team in eight years, according to Miller.

"It's great," Gogin said. "That was a very big surprise."

Gogin is still deciding on where he will go to college, but he's considering trying to play football for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire or UW-La Crosse.

Monroe finished 4-5 for the second straight season. The Cheesemakers had four other players receive second-team all-conference honors, junior defensive lineman Dylan Beaver, junior running back Cole Murray, junior wide receiver Alex Tordoff and junior defensive end Isaac Allen.

Five players received honorable mention all-conference, junior quarterback Tyler Elmer, senior linebacker Josh Richter, senior offensive lineman Ben Latimer, junior defensive end Hayden Arneson and Gogin at tight end.

One of the most memorable moments for many players this year was the Cheesemakers' thrilling 25-21 win over Oregon.

"I think people will always remember the homecoming game in the pouring rain where we beat Oregon," Gogin said.
