MONROE - Monroe Avalanche is launching an all-girls ice hockey team open to any children 12-years-old (Pee Wee age) and younger. Registration is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at the StateLine Ice and Community Expo.

"We're just trying to get as many players as possible - girls of all skill levels," said Richard Ness, who is in his first year working as a head coach.

"We want them to have fun, learn how to skate and play hockey."

Practices will be from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. every Tuesday for 10 weeks, with the first practice beginning Tuesday, Dec. 8. There will be six games, three home and three away. There will be no checking during play.

"We're going to teach more a finesse and passing style of play," Ness said.

Also, the team will serve as a club and will not play in the state tournament. However, Ness pointed out that next year the team will start the season right away and will be ready for league play.

Currently, there are at least eight girls on the team, five from Mites, two from Squirts and one Pee Wee level, and Ness is hoping that more will join at registration.

Cost is $100 per player, in addition to a $40 USA Hockey registration if a player is not already registered with USA Hockey. Also, full equipment is required - shoulder pads, knee pads, leg pads, skates, sticks and helmets. Goalie gear will be provided by MYHA. If a player does not have proper equipment or a jersey, Ness said the MYHA should be able to help out.

Volunteer hours and fundraising will remain the same for the current Monroe Avalanche girl players on the co-ed teams.

New players that are not currently registered on one of the co-ed teams are required a minimum 10-hour volunteer work at SLICE.
