GIRLS ROUNDUP: Third quarter a charme as Orioles surpass Comets

ALBANY - Because of their inability to finish, the Comets are, at least temporarily, finishing up conference play below Argyle in the Six Rivers East standings.

Albany (8-9, 4-7 Six Rivers East) struggled to finish around the rim and fell victim to a 13-6 third quarter of an otherwise evenly-played 43-40 game Monday night.

"We got the ball inside like we wanted to, but just couldn't find a way to put the ball in the hoop," Albany coach Brandon Bakken said.

The Orioles (11-8, 5-7) got 13 points from senior forward Brittany Flannery and intermittently pressed, never more effectively than during the third quarter.

Albany was led by senior Amy Golz's 14 points. The Comets face Barneveld Thursday night, needing a win to draw even with Argyle in the league standings.

Black Hawk 69, Juda 33

The usual suspects struck early and often for the Warriors in a runaway victory at home Monday night.

Black Hawk junior Paige Butler had seven of her 18 points, Aryn Wellnitz added eight of her 12 and point guard Gabi Lehner scored all five of her points in the first quarter as the Warriors (14-4, 9-2 Six Rivers East) ran out to a 26-6 lead through eight minutes of play.

Warriors coach Mike Flanagan rotated players and packages liberally.

"It's always nice to get more players in, give them more opportunities and see a bunch of different rotations," Flanagan said.

Parkview 54,

Brodhead 35

The Vikings put the clamps down on the top of the Rock Valley Monday night.

After Brodhead (10-5, 9-2 Rock Valley) scored 17 point in the opening quarter to take a 17-15 lead through one, Parkview (13-3, 9-1) only allowed the Cardinals 18 points the rest of the way to leapfrog their host in conference play by half a game.

Jasmine Koch led three Vikings in double-figures with 12 points and Cards junior post Kristen Ruchti matched it with a dozen of her own.

Pecatonica 49,

River Valley 38

The way the Vikings opened both halves of play on the road Monday night, they were afforded the fourth quarter off.

Pecatonica (16-2 overall) used a 20-6 first quarter and a 13-2 third quarter to lock down a non-conference victory on the road. Brittany Kent showcased her range, scoring 22 points and hitting four 3-pointers.

The Blackhawks outscored their visitors 20-7 in the fourth, but by then the game had been decided.

Darlington 52, Shullsburg 34

Cassie Fink shot the Miners right out of Darlington Monday night.

The Redbirds junior hit five 3-pointers in the non-conference matchup and scored a game-high 21 points.

Darlington took a 25-15 advantage into the half before adding on with a 16-11 third.
