SOUTH WAYNE - Monticello senior MacKenzie Hilliard did what she could, but the trio of Black Hawk Wellnitzes was too much to overcome.

The Ponies' senior ended her prep career with 20 points in Tuesday's tilt, but Kim (23 points), Aryn (6) and Melissa Wellnitz (5), along with Paige Butler's 17 points, gave No. 2 seed Black Hawk all it needed in a 70-51 WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal victory Tuesday in South Wayne.

"She hasn't had a night like that all year," Black Hawk head coach Mike Flanagan said of Hilliard.

The Wellnitzes scored 17 of the Warriors' 22 points in the second quarter, with Kim lead with eight.

"There's just that inherent communication," Flanagan said.

Black Hawk point guard Gabi Lehner added 10 points and hit two 3-pointers in the victory. The Warriors will host No. 3 seed Argyle Thursday at 7 p.m in a semifinal.

DIVISION 4>

DARLINGTON REGIONAL>

No. 3 Argyle 64, No. 6 Southwestern 41>

Facing a much taller Wildcats roster, Argyle's Kelli Fischer stood out above her adversaries.

The Orioles senior center put in 18 points, many coming off offensive rebounds, in Argyle's rout of Southwestern in a Division 4 regional quarterfinal at home.

"She did a great job of getting second shots," Orioles' first-year head coach Steve Dammen said. "Just did a nice job on the boards."

Brittany Flannery and Tina Dammen added 16 and 13 points, respectively, as the game hung in the balance at 46-36 after three quarters. The Orioles poured it on with an 18-5 final quarter, thanks to their pressure defense.

"We had constant ball pressure on them," Dammen said. "It wore them out."

No. 1 Pecatonica 46, No. 8 Benton 23>

Freshman Alisha Esselstein did her best Danielle Senf impression Tuesday night.

Playing for the banged-up Viking senior, Esselstein scored 10 points and Brittany Kent added 11 to lead top-seeded Pecatonica over Benton on its home floor.

The starters got involved from the outset in the Vikes' 18-6 first quarter outburst. Kent had six, Esselstein, Kimee Chandler and Ashley Gant had four points to push the tempo.

Pecatonica will host No. 4 Madison Abundant Life on Thursday after the Challengers beat Shullsburg, 52-20, in a 4-5 matchup.

CLINTON REGIONAL>

No. 2 Johnson Creek 70, No. 7 Juda 43>

The Panthers put up a fight in the first half, but couldn't muster up enough for a huge upset.

Seventh-seeded Juda trailed No. 2 Johnson Creek, 35-30, at halftime, but the Bluejays came out with a 26-6 third quarter to lead them to victory.

Heather Boeke had 10 points to lead the Panthers in a losing effort. Juda had no answer for Joelle Bauer and Kiara Lemminger, who poured in 21 and 18 points, respectively.

DIVISION 3>

No. 5 Belleville 58, No. 4 Darlington 47>

This was the wrong time for the hoop to be sealed in Darlington.

The Redbirds couldn't coax the ball down the cylinder as the Wildcats took advantage for an upset victory.

Belleville was led by Jessica O'Connor, who scored 16, while Jackie Walejko and Jenny Donahue put in 13 apiece. The Wildcats took a 15-9 lead in the first and extended it to 29-15 at intermission. Darlington junior Katie Martin had a game-high 19 points and hit three 3-pointers.

"We got in that hole and couldn't get over the hump," Redbirds head coach Kurt Cohen said.

No. 3 Parkview 52, No. 6 New Glarus 50>

There's no mistaking that the Glarner Knights' seniors knew the sort of finality was on the line Tuesday night.

New Glarus' three-headed senior monster of Shanna Karls (12 points), Dani Picket (12) and Kendra Mussehl (11) did their part to take a 38-34 lead into the fourth quarter in Orfordville.

But the Vikings made the necessary plays in the final minutes of an 18-12 fourth quarter that extended their season for at least one more game. Pickett drilled four 3s for New Glarus in the loss.
