Monticello 45, Albany 43
ALBANY - Neither Monticello nor Albany lit up the scoreboard at the free throw line, but the Ponies made the shots at the charity strip when it counted late in the game to secure a 45-43 win.
Monticello was 4-for-15 at the line while Albany was 9-for-17.
"We've been hitting about 50 percent at the line this season," coach Mike Brunhoefer said. "They only made four shots but they made them when they needed to."
Albany jumped out to an early 10-5 lead after one quarter and continued to hit their shots to build up a 22-16 lead at the half. Monticello got back into the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Comets 16-12.
The game was close in the fourth quarter as the Ponies went out in front and eventually increased their lead to seven points.
But Albany didn't quit, Brunhoefer said.
"We tied the game but they won it at the end at the free throw line."
Monticello was led in scoring by Sarah Silver's 13 points. Mersadi Hilliard added 12 in the Ponies' win. Kaitlyn Schulz led Albany with 11 points while Sydney Bump and Tiffany Thompson added 10.
Albany, 0-2 in conference and 2-4 overall, travels to Juda Thursday.
Monticello also won the junior varsity game, 26-22.
Juda 47, Argyle 38
ARGYLE - After a tight first quarter that saw the Orioles leading 10-8, the Panthers went on a run to break open the game, outscoring the Orioles 18-8 in the second quarter.
"They just started knocking down shots," Argyle coach Steve Dammen said.
Trailing 26-18 at the beginning of the third quarter, Argyle changed its defense and the Orioles were able to control the Panthers offense.
"Unfortunately we couldn't get anything going offensively," Dammen said.
His team had their chances but they just couldn't get the ball to drop, he said.
"We couldn't close the gap," Dammen said. "We got it to 37-30 but we couldn't get any closer."
Heather Boeke and Rachel Bartels each scored 13 points to lead all Panther scores. Brittany Riese added 11 in the win. Monticello was led in scoring by Kelsey Ostby's seven points.
Argyle, 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference, travels to Beloit turner to take on the Trojans tonight.
In junior varsity action, Juda defeated Argyle 28-15.
