GIRLS BASKETBALL: New Glarus loses; Pec wins

EVANSVILLE - Tanya Gruter scored 19 points for the New Glarus girls basketball team, but it wasn't enough to top Evansville on Saturday night. The Glarner Knights lost 54-46.

New Glarus (3-11, 2-4 Capitol South) trailed just 7-5 after the first quarter. Evansville (3-12, 2-9 Rock Valley North) went on a 13-7 run in the second quarter to lead 20-12 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Blue Devils kept at it, extending their lead to 35-23 headed into the fourth quarter.

The Knights tried to rally, scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Michelle Preston scored seven points for New Glarus and Alycia Atwell added six.

PECATONICA 48, RIVER VALLEY 37

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Vikings rebounded from a tough loss on the road to Black Hawk on Jan. 29 to top River Valley in a non-conference bout Saturday.

Pecatonica (9-7, 3-5 Six Rivers East) got 13 points from both Brittany Kent and Kimee Chandler, and nine points from Elli Gifford.

The Vikings took a 13-8 lead after the first quarter and held a 28-11 advantage at halftime.

From there, River Valley (2-14, 1-6 SW Wisconsin) couldn't come back.
