BELMONT - Darlington junior Ashley Martin scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Redbirds to a 49-42 girls basketball win over Belmont on Tuesday night.
Darlington (9-4, 4-3 SWAL) outscored Belmont 14-7 in the first quarter. Redbird coach Kurt Cohen said he wanted his team to get out to a fast start after two straight losses to Cuba City, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Division 3 state poll, and Riverdale.
Martin scored 18 of her 20 points in the first half as the Redbirds jumped out to a 26-21 halftime lead.
"Ashley Martin was huge in the post," Cohen said. "She really did a nice job of taking the basketball inside."
Darlington senior Katie Martin added eight points and Kari Blosch had seven.
The Redbirds travel to Boscobel on Thursday.
Brodhead 53, Jefferson 36
BRODHEAD - The Cardinals remain in the hunt for a Rock Valley South Conference title after blitzing Jefferson on Tuesday.
Brodhead (10-3, 9-1 Rock Valley South) outscored Jefferson 16-7 in the second quarter to open up a a 13-point halftime lead.
Brodhead senior Kristen Ruchti, a UW-Parkside recruit, led the Cardinals with 19 points and junior Dana Lewis added 15.
Courtney Mielke and Alyssa Harding each scored five points for Brodhead.
Brodhead finished the game a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line and hit three 3-pointers.
The Cardinals go back to work on Friday when they travel to Clinton.
