ELKHORN - The Monroe girls tennis team won the WIAA Division 1 Burlington subsectional Tuesday and will send three singles players and every doubles team to the sectional tournament.
"All of the girls are very deserving of what they had to accomplish," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said. "Both the conference and subsectional so far have been quite pleasing. You can always wish for one more. I'm satisfied."
Monroe edged Janesville Craig, 22-20, for the subsectional title. The Cheesemakers enter the WIAA Division 1 Lake Geneva Badger sectional tied with Fort Atkinson from the other subsectional with 22 points and in a battle for a sectional championship.
"That's an accomplishment in itself," Miller said. "I hope they continue with their success tomorrow."
Monroe junior Kristin McArdle, who is seeded No. 2 in the sectional, defeated Waterford's Ashley Erbe, 6-0, 6-0, to qualify for the sectional.
At No. 2 singles, sophomore Ellie Shuda won two matches to punch her ticket to the sectional. Shuda defeated Burlington's Maddy Endl, 6-0, 6-0, and she beat Janesville Craig's Kelly Collins, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Lily Priewe won two matches to qualify for the sectional. She defeated Delavan Darien's Joselyn Almburg, 6-0, 6-2, in her first match. Priewe then defeated Burlington's Rachel Mersberger in three sets, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-4, to qualify for the sectional.
Monroe senior Ashley Hermanson and junior Kelsey Erickson at No. 1 doubles defeated Waterford's Kristina Kamer and Linnea Braaten, 6-1, 6-0. Hermanson and Erickson are the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 3 seed in the sectional today. A win in their first sectional match would qualify them for state.
"I feel like Ashley, Kelsey and Kristin have a very good shot," Miller said of qualifying for state. "I am kind of banking on them coming back and winning their matches."
At No. 2 doubles, seniors Gwen Sutter and Emily Grossen defeated Elkhorn's Jackie Schultz and Emma Wargolt, 6-1, 6-0, in their first match. Sutter and Grossen then earned a trip to the sectional by beating Janesville Parker's Kim Amundson and Danielle Boyd, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Fellow seniors Taylor Weis and McKenzie Bruce at No. 3 doubles beat Elkhorn's Emily Remington and Victoria Bahl, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round. Weis and Bruce secured a sectional berth after defeating Lake Geneva Badger's Corissa Griffith and Kiersten Olsen, 6-4, 6-3.
