ALBANY - If Albany sophomore Brock Gilkes keeps pitching like he did in a 5-4 win over Black Hawk Tuesday, he may find himself on the mound more this spring.
Gilkes pitched four innings and gave up one run on four hits. He struck out seven to get the win pitching in relief against Black Hawk.
"After today, I think he may see more time," Albany coach Mitch Heinenmeyer said. "He held them down and gave us a chance to come back."
Black Hawk jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning off Albany senior pitcher Joey McNaught. McNaught pitched three innings and gave up three runs, while walking four.
The Comets rallied with a four-run fifth to take the lead.
Albany junior Clay Spooner singled and Trevor Mueller walked. McNaught followed with an RBI single and Gilkes delivered an RBI double.
Albany senior Devin Deegan reached on an error and Gilkes scored what proved to be the winning run.
"We came out a little flat," Heinenmeyer said. "It was a big win to get back to .500 overall and in conference."
Gilkes went 2-for-2 with one RBI and McNaught was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Spooner also finished 2-for-3.
Darlington 7, Mineral Point 5
MINERAL POINT - For the second time in less than one week, Darlington had a big comeback in the conference.
Darlington scored five runs in the third inning to rally for a 7-5 win over Mineral Point. With the win, Darlington improves to 4-2, 3-0 SWAL.
The Redbirds pounded out 14 hits.
Beloit Turner 9, Brodhead-Juda 4
BELOIT - Beloit Turner scored five runs in the second inning to roll to a 9-4 win over Brodhead-Juda.
Beloit Turner, the preseason No. 1 ranked team in Division 2, struck out 18 Cardinal hitters. The Cardinals managed just five hits. With the loss, Brodhead-Juda drops to 0-2. In other action, Watertown Luther Prep defeated New Glarus 11-0.
The Glarner Knights were limited to just one hit and committed three errors.
Argyle 6, Barneveld 0
ARGYLE - Senior Colton Ploessl pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Argyle to a 6-0 win over Barneveld Tuesday.
Ploessl struck out eight and walked three. The Orioles had three-run first inning to set the tone.
Argyle sophomore Collin Argue had a double.
