Gems sending 28 to state meet

MONROE - The Green County Family YMCA Gems gymnastics team is sending 28 athletes to the state tournament in Madison this weekend. The championships will run Saturday and Sunday at the Alliant Energy Center starting at 8 a.m.

According to Dawn Lederman of the YMCA, the 28 participants are the most Monroe has ever sent to the state meet. Gymnasts qualify individually from various levels of talent.

Lederman also said that there will be more than 800 gymnasts from 17 teams participating in the meet.

All gymnasts will compete on the uneven bars, vault, floor, balance beam and all-around events. Each gymnast achieved the required state qualifying score to earn their trip to state.

The Green County Gems competed at the Shamrock Surprise meet at the Racine Family YMCA March 13 and four gymnasts won championships in various events.

Chandra McGuire, 14, took first place on the beam (7.8) and on the floor (9.5) in the Level 7 gymnast competition. She took second place on the vault (8.8) and won the overall competition (26.1), which featured just three events since the bars were broken.

Josie Eberle, a Level 7 gymnast, won the vault (8.9) and Jenny Knox, 17, won the floor (9.35).

Ramsey Benkert, 13, took second place on the floor (8.75), vault (8.8) and in the all-around competition (24.65). Maria Eberle added a second place finish on the vault (8.5).

In the prep optional division, Sadie Swenson, 14, finished second place on the floor (9.65).

Jordan Hirsbrunner, 11, in the Level 4 division, finished third place on the beam (9.0) and in the all-around competition (35.45). She added fourth-place finishes on the bars (8.45), the floor (8.7) and on the vault (9.3).

Lexus Trickel, 11, took third place on the bars (8.5) and fourth on the vault (9.3). Brooke Isley, 10, took third place on the beam (8.9) and Meredith Hose took third in the floor (9.45).

In the Level 3 competition, Rhianna Teubuert, 9, finished first place on the bars (9.2), beam (9.5), floor (9.5), and in the all-around (37.75). She added a second place on the vault (9.55).

Alicia Kuester finished second in the all-around competition (36.8) and third on the bars (8.9). Kuester took fourth place on the beam (9.3), the floor (9.1) and vault (9.5).

Heather Burkhalter, 8, finished second on the vault (9.6) and third on the floor (9.4). She added a fourth-place finish overall (36.65). Burkhalter was seventh on the beam (9.2) and eighth on the bars (8.45).

Olivia Bobak, 8, finished fourth on the bars (8.8), fifth in the all-around (36.55) and seventh on the vault (9.55).

Jensen Christensen took fourth place on the floor (9.35) and Madeline Kuckuk took fourth on the beam (9.3).

Lindsay Egger finished fifth on the bars (8.75) and on the floor (9.0).
