BELMONT - The Pecatonica boys basketball team rode a big fourth quarter fueled by an executed gameplan and efficiency at the free throw line, coming back to beat Belmont, 52-50.
After finishing the third quarter down 34-30, the Vikings scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to take a seven-point lead.
Belmont responded with a run of their own, regaining a one-point lead with 1:30 to go in the game. However, the Vikings took back the lead for good thanks to two free throws by senior Jordan Mabin.
Free throws were key to Pecatonica's comeback, as the team converted 11 of 12 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Pecatonica head coach Matt Fink said the plan in the second half was to attack the basket, and his team executed by not only getting to the foul line but converting their shots.
"They did a really good job of attacking the basket," Fink said. "You still gotta make them once you step up there, and they did that tonight."
Sophomore Drew Schliem led all Vikings scorers, with 26. Senior Jon Hendrickson added 13.
The come-from-behind win caps what Fink says has been a long stretch of road games for the Vikings (3-4).
"We've been on the road for four or five games, and we needed a win," he said. "It was a really exciting locker room after the game. They're pretty happy."
A win is a win, but Fink said that the comeback was especially nice to see.
"It felt real good, because we've been battling all year with finishing games," he said. "We're young and we're trying to get some wins under our belt. We responded very positively that final minute."
