MADISON - Madison Edgewood's prolific one-two punch in Sam Foti and Emma Meriggioli proved to be problematic for the lady Cheesemakers on Friday night, as Monroe lost the conference duel, 51-30.

Tied at 17-17 apiece with just minutes before halftime, the host Crusaders were able to end the first half on a positive note by ringing off a series of plays to give them the lead heading into the break.

"They (Edgewood) ended the first half strong, and that gave them momentum heading into halftime," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said.

"They were able to carry it over into the second half and string together a few stretches that put us behind."

For Monroe, most of the damage was done by the Crusaders back court duo, who combined for 31 of their team's total points.

"They (Foti and Meriggioli) are two returning all-conference players, and they proved that tonight as they were hard to defend," Mathiason said. "They made it tough for us to overcome the deficit and make a comeback."

Senior Kirsten Vetterli led the Cheesemakers with nine points.

Monroe (3-10, 1-5) will host Fort Atkinson Monday, Feb. 3.

Belleville 56, New Glarus 37

BELLEVILLE - In a showdown of Highway 69 rivals, the New Glarus girls basketball fell short to their conference counterparts, losing by a score of 56-37.

After entering halftime with a 24-15 lead, the lady Knights soon found themselves in foul trouble, which opened the door for the host Wildcats.

"We had three players foul out for us tonight," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "Any time that happens, it makes the rest of the game difficult."

The Wildcats found a spark in the second half and were able to erase the deficit early in the third quarter. In the final quarter, Belleville erupted for 27 points in putting the game away.

"They (Belleville) started to connect on some open opportunities, and they were able to widen the gap once they started getting to the foul line," said Scheele. "Offensively, we just couldn't convert in the second half on a lot of our looks."

The Knights (6-8, 2-2) will look to put this loss behind them as they prepare for Waterloo Thursday, Feb. 6.
