FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe volleyball team went the distance in the Badger South Conference opener Thursday night but lost a nail-biter in five sets to Fort Atkinson 20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 12-15.
"It was really a crazy and intense match," Monroe coach Danya Ward said.
Monroe senior Becca Armstrong had 13 kills, four blocks and three aces. Junior Taylor Barrett finished with 10 kills and seven blocks. Senior Heather Barta had 29 assists.
Monroe senior Ashley Curtis led the team with 19 digs.
"Ashley Curtis played amazing," Ward said. "Our passing and defense was very good. We had a lot of blocks. Our service receive still needs work."
The Cheesemakers went 0-12 in the conference last year, but Ward is optimistic for this season after the team's performance in the conference opener Thursday.
"They have a different attitude this year than last year," Ward said. "This is a new year. They are working hard."
