FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe swimming team has recently battled illness and the Cheesemakers lost a dual meet to Fort Atkinson 117-52 Tuesday.

Monroe sophomore Rachel Root won the 100-meter backstroke with a personal record time of 1 minute, 3.09 seconds. Root also won the 200 freestyle with a PR of 2:05.19. Root took one second off her 200 freestyle time and three seconds off her 100 backstroke time.

"We were not as energetic in the water as in past meets, so we are going to take tomorrow off to get some greatly needed rest and hopefully a dose of healthy eating," Monroe coach Linda Moser said.

Monroe senior Leanna Schwartzlow finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.09) and second in the 200 individual medley (2:20.18).

The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Sarah Kind, Angie Beaver, Schwartzlow and Root took second with a time of 2:01.96. The same quartet combined to finish second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.22).

Senior Nichole Lattin finished third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:24.72. The Cheesemakers' 400 freestyle relay team of Rachel Wellnitz, Sarah Tomasiewicz, Jess Moehn and Lattin took third (4:30.81).

Monroe turned in several other PRs. Sarah Alexander took 10 seconds off of her 200 IM time. Jenny Meritt took six seconds off of her 200 free time and Cat Weeden took a second off of her 50 free time.

Moser said the Cheesemakers will get back to practice and start preparing for a home meet Tuesday, Oct. 12 against Milton.

"It is our last home meet and Senior Night so it will be wrapped with emotions and I know lots of energy," she said.
