MONROE - Saturday was an awesome day for football. The Fifth grade Red was on a mission as they defeated Waunakee 28-0. With the win, the Fifth Grade Red improved to 2-1.
Offensively, they dominated the offensive line by generating 198 hard fought yards for four touchdowns. Led by Brandon Blum, Aaron Ziolkowski, Bodie Minder, Conner Andrews, Payton Sawdey and Hunter Snider.
The Fifth Grade Red dominated on defense preventing Waunakee from gaining a yard on offense with fourteen plays of zero gain or a loss. The Fifth Grade Red also forced three turnovers (fumble and two interceptions). In the last six quarters the defense has stopped the opponent to 27 plays of no gain or a loss.
Fifth Grade White
Monroe Blaze Fifth Grade White team hosted Verona White on a cold, blustery day at Dr. Scholl field on Saturday, Spet. 22. While the weather was cold, Monroe's play on offense and defense was hot, as Monroe beat Verona 26-0 for their first shutout of the season. The win was a complete team effort from all 18 members of the team.
Specifically impressive was Henry Hanson, Logan Leuzinger and Tim Beckman's play at tight end and the offensive line of Dayne Lawinger, Darien Hargrove, Ben Figi, Julian Gruber and Deion Hargrove, blocking for a backfield that racked up 293 yards of offense and four touchdowns. Nick Bansley ran for 205 yards on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns. Payton Sawder rushed for 39 yards on five carfries. Jared Dillon rushed for 28 yards on five carries and Judson Rikkers rushed for 14 yards on three carries. Noah Becker rushed for 3 yards on 2 carries and Dylan Fahrney had four yards on 1 carry. On the season, this offensive line has enabled the Fifth Grade White to average 30 points per game through the first three games.
While the offense was impressive, the defense dominated the game, holding Verona to 57 yards for the game. All 18 players were involved in at least one tackle, with Bansley accounting for 10 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Gruber added six tackles and Leuzinger had five tackles and a fumble recovery. The Hargrove twins and Sawdey added five tackles each. Most impressive, however, was the play of Cael Losenegger, Dustin Gough, Noah Amacher and Connor Allen in the second half, preserving the shutout. Fifth Grade White travels to Sun Prairie for a showdown with the Gold team at 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 29.
Fourth grade
The fourth grade Blaze took another lost to St. Francis 14-0.
The team played less distracted and with greater vision on defense than the week before according to coach Toby Golembiewski. Golembiewski said the players are starting to improve, build confidence and play faster. Hard work is expected to continue this week to improve each player to make the team stronger.
Sixth Grade Red
The Sixth Grade Red team had an outstanding day defeating Verona White 48-12. The offensive line did an excellent job blocking for tailbacks Colby Argall and Jacob Amacher. They both combined for a total of 294 yards.
Argall had five touchdowns and two two-point conversions and Amacher had one touchdown and one conversion. Along with Amacher's efforts as a tailback, he was also part of the outstanding blocking the team did as a whole. Blaze also passed for 60 yards. Evan Blumer connected for the second week with Evan Thompson for a 60-yard TD just before halftime. On the defensive side the team was stout, only giving up two scores. Sixth Grade Red forced six Verona turnovers. Many of the Blaze had multiple tackles and takeaways.
Thompson had seven tackles, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries. Wade Sweeney had seven tackles and Kade King had seven tackles one forced fumble and one recovery. Blumer had five tackles, one fumble recovery and Argall finished with five tackles. Amacher finished with one tackle and one interception. Jacob Setterstrom had two tackles and one fumble recovery. Seth Ballard had two tackles and Kyle Lovelace finished with two tackles. Gabe Witt, Tyler Triem, Ben Dunlavey, Ethan Klecker all had one tackle. The Sixth Grade Red will play St Francis Tuesday night.
Sixth Grade White
The Blaze Sixth Grade White and Waunakee White fought to an 18-18 tie at Waunakee Intermediate School.
Waunakee took an early 6-0 lead on a 70-yard pass play on the second play of the game. The Blaze immediately evened the score on their fourth offensive play on an 80-yard pass play from Jared Baumgartner to Jordan Montgomery.
Waunakee White scored on a 39-yard pass play in the second quarter to go ahead 12-6. Again, the Blaze responded with a 56-yard run by Jordan Montgomery to tie the game at 12. Just prior to the half the Blaze held Waunakee to get the ball back and drive down to the Waunakee 3-yard line where Baumgartner scored on a quarterback sneak on the last play of the half to give the Blaze an 18-12 lead.
In the second half, there were many good defensive stops including interceptions by the Blaze's Kyle Gilbertson, Mitch Quinn, and Daniel Lapp. Neither team sustained drives against the hard-playing defenses. Late in the fourth quarter, Waunakee drove down to the 5-yard line where they scored on a fourth down pass play to tie the game at 18 with 1:24 remaining in the game. The Blaze play Warner Park Purple at the YMCA field next Saturday and look to continue their improved play.
Seventh Grade
Saturday the seventh grade Blaze came away with a 22-6 win over McFarland. During the first five minutes of play, quarterback Dylan Scace continued to hand off to Sam Kind and Brayden Zettle all the way down the field allowing Zettle to score a touchdown and Dempzy Foley to add the PAT. The score remained 8-0 with defensive players: Nick Quinn, Joe Hughes, Joe Crubaugh, Mitchell Bartelt, Sam Hanson and Brady Buol holding strong.
It wasn't until the fourth quarter that McFarland scored, but missed the PAT. Strong offensive blocking by Travis Wolf, Tyler Leutenegger, Dylan Steiner, Jevon Gibson and Brett Dorsey allowed quarterback Jonah Tostrud to hand off to Kind who scored on a 40-yard run. Foley again added the PAT. On the next offensive drive Tostrud, with a quarterback sneak, ran the ball in 45-yards for a touchdown. Next week's game is against Pec-Argyle in Argyle.
Eighth Grade
Monroe eighth grade won a hard fought battle against Pec-Argyle 16-8.
The defense was led by dominating performance by Dylan Beaver with Kyle Walters, Tim Thoman and Nate Smith contributing on the defensive line. Tyler Johnson, Jacob Kind, Alex Tordoff, Issac Allen and Cole Murray at linebackers with Tyler Elmer, Kendall Paulson, Carter Sawdey and Ryne Miller holding Pec-Argyle to only five catches in the game.
Johnson came up with a fumble late in the game to help give the Blaze the go ahead score. Beaver had a perfect goal-line stand and Kind had an interception with seconds left in the game to seal the win. Kind also had a blocked punt. Monroe held Pec-Argyle to 188 total yards and only six first downs.
The offense was led by hard running from Cole Murray, Sawdey and Tyler Elmer. Murray had 13 carries for 86 yards and one touchdown. Elmer had 14 carries for 33 yards and one touchdown. Elmer was 3 for 10 and threw for 37 yards and one pick. Miller continued to be perfect on the season with two more PAT kicks. The offensive line had a battle in the trenches all game long against a very strong Pec-Argyle front. The line was led by Hayden Arneson, Tim Thoman, Ethan Coplien, Kyle Walter, Cameron Fiez, with Nate Smith and Issac Allen at tight end. The Blaze eighth graders continue the season Saturday at Belleville.
