DUBUQUE - It didn't take Monroe senior Cody Faust long to get off to a running start in the season-opening Dubuque Invitational Saturday.
Faust finished third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.79 seconds and took fourth in the high jump clearing 5 feet, 8 inches.
"For this point in the season, that is an excellent 400 time for Cody to run indoors," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "He's one of our senior leaders we are expecting a whole lot out of this year. He's up to the challenge and he showed that Saturday."
With spring break, the Cheesemakers were missing several athletes, but had 22 compete in the 13-team meet. Monroe with 13.5 points finished 11th. Cedar Rapids Jefferson won the team title 88-72 over Linn-Mar.
Monroe junior Thang Lu took third place in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 8.27 seconds.
"It was close to his best 800 time," Miller said. "It was his best 800 indoors. He (Lu) will be contending for some events at conference and in the postseason."
Tri-State
PLATTEVILLE - The Sugar River boys track team won the 18-team Tri-State Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Saturday.
Brodhead-Juda senior Logan Maurer won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 4 inches.
Sugar River displayed its depth in the shot put with three of the top four. Sugar River senior Michael Fink finished second place (48-9), followed by junior teammate Landon Zimmerman (47-3) and senior Jackson McMahan who was fourth (44-4).
Sugar River senior Brandon Shemanski won the long jump (20-4) and Darlington senior Jason Singer took fourth place (18-8), followed by Sugar River senior Ryan Hayes who was seventh (18-7). The Redbirds took third as a team.
In the triple jump, Darlington senior Cole Trumble finished second place (37-11 3/4) and sophomore teammate Mitchell Wagner was sixth (33-0 1/2).
Brodhead-Juda's 3,200-meter relay team of junior Jakob Harper, senior C.J. Hack, sophomore Tyler Urness and sophomore Ruben Larson won the race with a time of 8 minutes, 43.48 seconds, which was about five seconds ahead of Camanche, Iowa. Darlington's 3,200 relay team took third place (8:53.70).
Albany senior Brennan Bloedel finished second place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 37.94 seconds. The Redbirds had two of the top four in the 3,200. Darlington sophomore Colton Hackett took third place (10:56.48) and junior teammate Sean Barbee was fourth (11:10.79). Sugar River sophomore Kyle Fredrickson took seventh (11:12.77).
Darlington senior Jaden Komprood finished third-place in the 1,600 (4:43.49) and took sixth in the 800 (2:09.84).
Sugar River junior Tyler Gilbertson finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run (4:56.82) and fifth in the 800 (2:09.70).
Singer finished fourth place in the 400 (53.71). Senior teammate Thomas Schultz finished seventh in the 800 (2:11.98). Monticello senior John Zuber took eighth in the 800 (2:12.77). Albany senior Aaron Johnson finished seventh in the 1,600 (5:04.56) and was ninth in the 800 (2:13.49).
Sugar River senior Colton Boley took third in the 55 hurdles (8.31). Sugar River senior Tanner Hofer took fourth place in the high jump (5-8) and Brodhead-Juda freshman Brekkan Day was fifth (5-8).
In the girls' meet, Brodhead-Juda junior Taylor Bluemel won the 1,600 (5:22.23) and Sugar River senior Brianna Roska was fifth (5:51.59).
Sugar River senior Noelle Marie won the 3,200 (12:07.47) and Monticello junior Ashley Risley was sixth (13:40.27).
Sugar River sophomore Krista Diaz took second in the 55 hurdles (9.03) and fourth in the 200 (28.21). Darlington junior Carly Langkamp finished second in the 400 (1:04.63) and Brodhead-Juda freshman Maddie Harding took fourth (1:06.9).

Bluemel teamed with Purdue, Ashley Douglas and Morgan Adkins to win the 3,200 relay (11.01.57), which was well ahead of runner-up Sugar River (11:02.40) and third-place Darlington (11:11.30). Brodhead-Juda junior Katie Flory took fifth in the high jump (4-8).
