ALBANY - The Evansville girls basketball team used its quickness to spark a big second-quarter surge to knock off Albany 46-32 in a non-conference game Tuesday.
Evansville outscored the Comets 15-7 in the second quarter to take a 12-point lead at the half. The Blue Devils added to their lead with a 15-6 third quarter run. Evansville's Brielle Greenleaf scored a game-high 18 points.
Albany (4-14, 3-6 Six Rivers East) was led by junior Marley Malkow, who scored a team-high nine points. Albany freshman Paige Blumer added eight points.
"They were quick in that second quarter, and we just didn't close out quick enough," Albany assistant coach Sara Freitag said. "We just weren't making shots.
"We have to put this game behind us and focus on moving forward, coming out strong and protecting the ball."

MARSHALL - New Glarus got a chance to test itself against the top team in the Capitol South Conference.
Marshall's Vany Gumz scored a game-high 20 points to help the Cardinals roll to a 75-29 win over the Glarner Knights. Marshall, ranked No. 6 in the Division 3 state poll, raced out to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter. Marshall extended its lead in the second quarter and led by 34 points at the half, 44-10. With the loss, New Glarus drops to 6-12, 3-4 Capitol South.
"Not very many things went well," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "They came out fullcourt pressing us and got us off beat from the start. We were making some poor passes, and they executed.
"We were down and stayed down after that. We were down 20-4 early, and they were ready go. So we were stuck behind all night."
New Glarus sophomore Evonne Strahm and sophomore McKinley Righter each scored a team-high eight points.
