Evansville-Albany wrestlers knock off Monroe

EVANSVILLE - Monroe wrestling coach Jeriamy Jackson doesn't believe the Cheesemakers wrestled up to their ability in a 34-25 dual meet loss to Evansville-Albany on Friday.

"We wrestled kind of flat," Jackson said. "I hope it's a wake-up call. We have to work a lot harder in the practice room."

Monroe doesn't have much time to rebound, with a dual meet at Stoughton scheduled for Tuesday.

The Cheesemakers wrestled without junior heavyweight Brett Zimmerman, who Jackson said missed the meet due to a skin condition. The Cheesemakers won 6 of the 12 matches wrestled. Monroe junior Troy Gorr stepped up at heavyweight and defeated Evansville-Albany's Ryan Meehan 3-0. Senior Kevin Klopfenstein (138) defeated Alex Lange 2-1. Sophomore Cody Wolf (145) pinned Evansville-Albany's Nick Lehman in 5:49, and junior Ryan Hughes (160) defeated Aaron Campbell 10-1. Senior Dusty Burkhalter (182) defeated Tyler Grant 6-3, and senior Trevor Gorr (220) pinned Cody Meyer in 1:46.

"Evansville did what they were supposed to do," Jackson said. "They stayed off their backs and wrestled defensively."
