BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica baseball team's defense broke down at the most inopportune time in a heartbreaking 12-11 loss to Belmont in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal on Thursday.

The Vikings led 10-7 going into the seventh inning but committed two of their eight errors in that inning as the Braves rallied to win.

"It's a tough way to go out when you don't play well defensively," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said of his team's eight errors. "Defensively, we just struggled."

Only one of the 12 runs the Vikings gave up was earned. Pecatonica freshman Drew Schliem pitched four innings in relief and took the loss. Schliem gave up six unearned runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked three. Matt Goldthorpe started and went three innings. He gave up six runs (one earned) on six hits. He struck out two.

Schliem went 2-for 3 to lead the Vikings at the plate. Mitch Steinhoff was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
