DARLINGTON - Darlington junior Alex Erickson kick-started the Redbirds in the first quarter and helped propel them to a 61-51 win over South-western Friday night.
Erickson scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in the first half. He made four 3-pointers in the game and South-western switched to a box-in-one defense after the first quarter.
Darlington (15-1, 9-1 SWAL), ranked fourth in the Division 3 WisSports.net Coaches Poll, jumped out to a 15-7 lead. The Redbirds extended their lead to 13 points by halftime.
Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said playing good defense was critical as Southwestern made several clutch shots in the second half.
"That is the key to what makes us go," Hopkins said of the Redbirds' defense.
Junior Tucker Wiegel scored 10 points and senior Tanner Havens added eight.
