DARLINGTON - Darlington senior Alex Erickson can score in bunches, but it's his defensive play that caught his coach's attention Friday night in the Redbirds' 59-46 win over Mineral Point.
Erickson scored a game-high 30 points, but he shut down Mineral Point's leading scorer Garrett Bennett, limiting him to just two points.
"This is the best game Alex has played all year," Darlington coach Michael Hopkins said.
Erickson hit four of his six 3-pointers in the first half to spark the Redbirds, ranked eighth in the state in the Associated Press Division 4 poll, to a 20-7 first quarter lead. The Pointers switched to a zone in the second quarter and outscored the Redbirds 16-10 in the period to cut the Redbirds' lead to seven points at halftime.
Darlington senior Tucker Wiegel scored 11 points for the Redbirds.
"Tucker Wiegel stepped up," Hopkins said.
