MONROE - For the second straight year, Emily Grossen and Kelsey Erickson cruised to the championship in the Women's Open division of the 46th annual Monroe City Doubles Tournament on Sunday.
Grossen and Erickson defeated Hannah Grossen and Grace Deininger in the title match 6-2, 6-3 at Recreation Park. It marks the third title in four years for Grossen and Erickson. The duo won the Women's Open division in 2014. Emily Grossen has won a title five straight years. In 2015, she captured the Class B championship with Shannon Brown and won the Class B title in 2013 with Erickson.
In the first-round, Emily Grossen and Erickson defeated Cierra Larson and Kristen DuPuis 6-1, 6-0. They earned a shot at the title by knocking off Hallie Signer and Kiara Miller in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1.
Grace Tostrud and Jensen Christensen defeated Signer and Miller in a third-place match 6-4, 6-4. In the consolation match, Jill Horn and Cindy Bonnell defeated Greta Rath and Bekah Rath 6-1, 6-2.
In the men's tournament, Al Schroeder and Caleb Ray defeated Joe Soddy and Kyle Everson in the title match 6-2, 6-4. Two weeks ago, Soddy had defeated Schroeder to win the singles championship. It marked Schroeder's first loss in the city singles tournament in 12 years.
Schroeder and Ray breezed through the first two rounds of doubles. Schroeder and Ray beat Steve Wandfluh and Nick Dearth in a first-round match 6-1, 6-0. In the semifinals, Schroeder and Ray rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Silas Setterstrom and Frank Meier.
Setterstrom and Meier finished third after outlasting Kevin Monahan and Matt Monahan in three sets 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. In the consolation match, Chris Garrow and Jeremy Miller defeated Christopher Andraski and Brad Saugstad 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
