Edgewood too much for Monroe

MADISON - The Monroe boys basketball team won't sweep Madison Edgewood this year after the Crusaders avenged an early season loss and ran away with a 59-49 win over the Cheesemakers Thursday.

Edge-wood used an 18-8 run in the second quarter to take a nine-point lead at the half. The Crusaders never looked back outscoring the Cheesemakers (9-10, 4-6 Badger South) in the second half 26-25.

"That was a tough one to lose because we wanted to get to .500 in conference, and wanted to get to 10 wins. But we didn't compete at a real high level.

"The whole game we were on our heels. We were not the aggressor at all. We cut it down to seven multiple times in the fourth quarter, but couldn't do what we've been doing most of the year, and that's taking guys off their sweet spots. They got to wherever they wanted.

Monroe sophomore Carter Sawdey scored a team-high 13 points. Monroe senior Jacob Flannery added 10 points.

Madison Edgewood's Bryce Haefer scored a game-high 19 points and Alex Arians had 16 points.

Monroe will play at Sauk Prairie Tuesday. Sauk Prairie is led by Seth Kostroski, who is averaging 18.2 points per game this year. Sauk Prairie (15-4) is second place in the Badger North (8-2), which is two games behind Mount Horeb (9-0).

"Sauk Prairie has one of the best players, Kostroski; everybody we play is good, but for us to have a chance we have to do the little things better and we have to do it for four quarters."
