MADISON - The Cheesemakers had their girls soccer season come to an end during Saturday's WIAA Division 2 regional final at Breese Stevens Field. Badger South Conference rival Madison Edgewood knocked off Monroe 2-0.
Edgewood's Lorraine Guerin scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute of the first half. The Crusaders slipped another ball past Monroe's senior goalkeeper Katie Coplien in the 53rd minute on a shot by Mackenzie Reese.
"Katie played a fantastic game in goal," Monroe head coach Miriam O'Neill said. "Katie's sister Abby (Coplien) played great defense as well."
Coplien had 12 saves against Edgewood's brutal offense attack. The Cheesemakers (8-8-3) could not mount a counter-offensive, taking just one shot on goal in 80 minutes of play.
"We played a very tough game," O'Neill said.
Edgewood (13-2-6) moves on to the sectionals for the third-straight season.
Sugar River 4, Mount Horeb 2
MADISON - The Raiders will meet up with Edgewood on Thursday in the sectional semifinals after a rousing regional final win over the Vikings on Saturday at Breese Stevens Field.
Sugar River (22-1-1) got its first goal in the 23rd minute off the leg of Kendyl Anderson. Not even three minutes later, Mackenzie Christensen sent a 50-yard bomb into the goal on a direct kick to make it 2-0.
Mount Horeb was clearly rattled as the Raiders scored twice more in the next 10 minutes. Senior Hannah Kernen scored her 37th goal of the season off of a pass from Christensen in the 29th minute, and Lauren Narveson made it 4-0 in the 34th minute.
The Vikings (9-6-4) didn't get on the board until the second half, when they scored both of their goals.
Thursday's game is slated for 7 p.m. on Thursday at Breese Stevens Field again. The winner will play either Sauk Prairie (13-5-1) or Sparta (15-5-3) on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Mount Horeb for the right to go to the state tournament.
