MADISON - The Monroe Cheesemakers put together a strong defensive effort, but couldn't muster much on offense as they fell 3-0 to Madison Edgewood Tuesday.
The Crusaders got the only goal of the first half in the seventh minute to take a 1-0 halftime lead. Edgewood scored in the 56th minute and in the 64th minute to hold off the Cheesemakers.
"It was a good test for our team. We're a very young team," said Monroe head coach Miriam O'Neill. "We did a really nice job in the first half, holding them to one goal."
Goaltender Gail Lavoie had 18 saves for the Cheesemakers, including back to back saves on a penalty kick and rebound.
"It's really difficult to save a penalty kick," said O'Neill. "We had some positive aspects to our game."
Monroe (2-1) will be home to face Stoughton on Thursday at 5 p.m.
