MONROE - The Monroe boys golf team lost in a tournament to Madison Edgewood by one stroke earlier this season. That had Monroe golf coach Braden Rindy optimistic about the Badger South Conference showdown with the Crusaders Monday.

Madison Edgewood continued its hot play, defeating Monroe by six shots, 162-168 at a blustery Monroe Country Club. The Crusaders (5-0 Badger South) were coming off a championship in the Morgan Stanley Shootout.

"Some of our kids didn't shoot their best rounds," Rindy said. "You can't afford to do that against a good team like Edgewood."

Monroe sophomore Nick Baumann shot a 4-over-par 38 to lead the Cheesemakers. With the loss, Monroe drops to 2-3 Badger South.

Baumann had three straight pars on the first three holes on the front nine. He bogeyed No. 4 and then bounced back with two pars on Nos. 5 and 6.

Monroe junior Tanner Thompson and senior Matt Miller both got out to slow starts. Thompson bogeyed Nos. 1 and 2 and double bogeyed No. 3. He bounced back, parring three of the next four holes to finish with a 42. Miller bogeyed Nos. 1 and 2 and then had a double bogey on No. 3 and a triple bogey on No. 4 to finish with a 45.

"He (Miller) was just a little bit off," Rindy said. "That's golf. After the match, he went to work on his game. He is a resilient player. He will bounce back."

Monroe sophomore Devon Boeck carded a 43 and had three pars, but double bogeyed Nos. 6 and 7.

The Cheesemakers won't have to wait long to erase the loss to the Crusaders from their memory. Monroe will host Fort Atkinson in a rescheduled match today at Monroe Country Club. It will be the final conference dual match before the Badger Conference tournament May 20 at the House on the Rock Golf Course in Spring Green.

"We just have to put this behind us, refocus and start over," Rindy said. "Hopefully, we can use this as motivation going into our match today and conference next week. We know we can shoot low scores and compete."
