EAST TROY - Dreams of a perfect season for the Brodhead girls basketball team were dashed after the second-ranked Cardinals lost 63-49 to third-ranked East Troy Monday night.
It was a battle of unbeatens and the Trojans (19-0) came out on top with a big second half. Brodhead (18-1) led 21-20 at the half. However, the Trojans outscored the Cardinals 20-8 in the third quarter to seal the victory.
East Troy's Rachel Atchison scored 19 points to lead the Trojans. If Brodhead gets another shot at East troy it wouldn't come until the state championship at the Resch Center.
Juda 45, Albany 33
ALBANY - Inconsistency at the free throw line doomed the Albany girls basketball team, as the Comets fell to Six Rivers East foe Juda at home.
The Comets started the game with a 6-0 run, but the Panthers answered with their own 8-0 run to finish the first quarter up two.
Albany won the second quarter 12-10, tying the game at 18 at halftime.
Albany coach Bryce Pickett attributed the uptick in offensive output in the second quarter to his team's ability to get to the free throw line and convert.
"We knew that we could attack them aggressively on offense," Pickett said. "The major difference was we finished our free throws in the first half, and in the second half we were cold from the line."
Juda won the third quarter 14-4 and took the fourth quarter 13-11.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Molly Marass who scored 15 points. Brittany Moe also chipped in 11 for the Panthers.
Felicia Conley was the leading scorer for Albany, with 10 points, and Carlie Peters added 8.
Albany (4-14, 1-10) will travel to Barneveld on Thursday, looking to improve on their 75-14 loss to the Golden Eagles earlier this season.
"I think it really starts on defense," Pickett said, adding that if they can gain some momentum on defense it could spark the offense.
Black Hawk 49, Parkview 37
ORFORDVILLE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team got a valuable road win, beating Parkview.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead, taking the first quarter by a score of 15-9. Parkview chipped away at the lead in the second quarter, but Black Hawk pushed further and further ahead by winning the third and fourth quarters.
Jen Wellnitz led the Warriors, with 22 points, and Mikayla Sigafus and Michelle Flanagan added 13 and eight respectively.
"(Jen's) scoring was pretty consistent throughout the game," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "McKayla was the beneficiary of some pretty good passes. We distributed the ball pretty well."
Every road win is big, but Flanagan was especially happy to get the 'W' in Orfordville considering Black Hawk's upcoming matchup against Monticello.
"We're finishing off this year. We had a lot of away games in the second half of the season," Flanagan said. "Now's the time you want to build some momentum."
The Warriors (12-8, 7-3 Six Rivers East) will take on the Ponies Thursday in Monticello, with second place in the conference on the line. It's a quick turnaround, as the two teams just played each other 10 days ago in a snow makeup game. Monticello narrowly won that game, 51-50.
"It sets up for a good battle," Flanagan said, adding that the Warriors and Ponies are pretty evenly matched. "Those are the ones you want to be playing later in the season (to) test your mettle."
In other action, Pecatonica defeated Highland 60-33.
